Public schools in our community are closed from February 18-22, giving families with school-aged children and teens a break from their usual routines. If you don’t already have plans, there are LOTS of things to do and try this week if you have the time off. Here are some possibilities:
Saturday, 2/16
- Night Sledding under the lights at Unity Park in Turners Falls, 4-9pm, thanks to Montague Parks & Recreation
- Montague Square Dance at the Common Hall in Montague Center, 7-10pm. Family friendly – all dances will be taught – beginners and kids are always welcome! Calling by Bob Livingston, music by the house band, $5-$10 sliding scale
Sunday, 2/17
- The Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls is open from 10am-4pm today and every day through 2/24! Stop by for a variety of investigation stations all week at the front entrance to the center, on how wildlife adapt to winter —mammals, insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians. For all ages, especially children, accompanied by an adult.
- Cabin Fever Seed Swap, 1-4:30pm upstairs at 170 Main St, Greenfield (Greenfields Market ). You are welcome even if you don’t bring any seeds to trade!
Monday, 2/18
- Free Community Meal at Our Lady of Peace Church, 90 7th St, Turners Falls. This weekly dinner, open to all, is hosted by the Franklin County Community Meals Program. Doors open at 5, meal is served at 5:30.
Tuesday, Feb 19
- Get in Touch with Winter, 10:30-11:30am at the Great Falls Discovery Center. Meet in the Great Hall for a hands-on family program of experiments and demonstrations. Weather permitting, we may investigate outdoors. Bundle up! For school-age children, their grown-ups, siblings and friends.
- Family Swim at the pool at Turners Falls High School, 6:30-7:30pm. For Montague residents the fee is $3.50 for youth, $4.50 for adults (18+), $3.50 for adults who are 65+.
- Special Town Meeting for Montague, 6:30 pm in the theater at Turners Falls High School. Montague has an elected town meeting of 120 people who represent its 8400 residents. Come see a local government in action!
Wednesday, 2/20
- Mobile Food Bank in Turners Falls, 1:30-2:30pm, in the parking lot at 62 5th St. Bring a bag and fill it with free fresh, ingredients from the Food Bank of Western MA. All are welcome – no eligibility requirements. Volunteers needed, as well! More info
- Munch and Move! at Mahar Regional High School in Orange, 5-8pm This annual family night is free and open to all — and we hear it’s a blast!
Thursday, 2/21

- Discovering Trees, 1:30-2:30pm at the Great Falls Discovery Center in Turners Falls. Meet in the Great Hall to join Student Conservation Association service members as we rediscover the magic of trees. Appropriate for families, school-age children, their grown-ups, siblings and friends; bring weatherproof clothes and shoes.
Friday, 2/22
- Legos at the Library, 11-1pm at the Carnegie Library in Turners Falls.

- Rumble at the Shea, doors open at 5:30pm, free food and music, screening of award-winning documentary “Rumble: The Indians Who Rocked the World” at 7pm, followed by discussion and then more music! All ages.
Saturday, 2/23
- Movie of the Month at the Library, 11am. Watch “Small Foot,” rated PG, at the Carnegie Library in Turners Falls.
- Winter Wildlife Detectives, 1-3pm, Northfield Mountain Education and Recreation Center. Ages 6+. Pre-registration required by calling 1-800-859-2960. Free, but if trails are open for skiing, snowshoes are required, and snowshoe rental is $10 ($30 max/family). If snow is insufficient for snowshoeing, the program will take place on foot.
