A series of posters like this one have been displayed in the hallways at Great Falls Middle School this spring, thanks to Community Action Youth Program‘s Turners Falls ShoutOut! Leadership Development group. Here is the background information they provided to to GFMS teachers and staff about this project.
Hello Teachers and Staff of GFMS:
We are happy to announce the beginning of our social norms marketing campaign, which features posters, banners and more around our school. All of which will be showing data from our school climate survey from last Fall. The key reason we do the campaign is to increase positive norms at our schools.
You will see posters displaying positive norm messages in the halls of our school, starting this Monday 3/5/2018! Our first message will be:
9 out of 10 Great Falls 8th graders tried to be friendly with a student who was very different from them.
A heads up for a possible student question: Students may say ‘that’s not true, I have seen many students be unfriendly to those that are different from them.” Let them know that sometimes, young people act different from what they believe. Especially if they think their peers feel a different way–which is a big part of why we do this campaign: to change this mis-perception.
That was the inspiration for our tagline this year: Change Perception. Change Behavior.
Thank you for all you do!
The youth at ShoutOut!
